we bought our home, the pool was a wreck, half full with
green water full of algae, splotchy plaster and a few obvious
cracks. Rumor has it that it started out as a reservoir
for a citrus orchard back in the 1930s and after patching
a few cracks with epoxy resin and hitting dirt 2 inches
into the floor, we believed it.
Fast forward another seven years and the pool was leaking
an inch of water a day, so we had to bite the bullet and
find a pool plastering and renovation company. The process
took literally months as we contacted and got quotes from
at least eight companies. And that's just the ones that
actually showed up to take a look at the project.
My concerns were the contractor's plans for doing the repairs
and their experience and wherewithal to handle the project
and of course, price. That left three companies in the running.
Oly's had the best plan, a competitive price and proved
to be the longest one in business, surviving the housing
crash unlike many others.
Oly's started as promised, showed up when they said they
would and went the extra mile. For example, we had a few
cracked and chipped bricks in the pool coping. When the
replacement bricks didn't quite match, Mark Roberts, the
owner, went the extra mile to find a better match which
was not easy feat for a product that is obsolete.
One of our skimmers also needed rebuilding to resolve buckling
tile and water damaged structure. Eric, Oly's foreman, removed
the existing tile, added rebar and restored it perfectly.
The old tile was also reused saving us the anguish of finding
an alternative or replacing all of the tile on the pool
which would have added a significant cost to the project.
When it came to the pebble finish, Mark is a master. The
difference between this job and one done on another pool
that we had is stunning. Mark and Eric spent nearly an entire
day acid washing the pool to get it absolutely perfect.
Now, I do have to be completely honest and give you fair
warning. If you're looking for warm and fuzzy and someone
that won't sugar coat reality, Mark might not be your man.
He's a no nonsense type person and he'll tell you like it
is. Some might think him gruff. Don't let that scare you
off. My experience is that he knows his business, is honest,
does what he says he'll do and is a perfectionist and a
craftsman, all the qualities that I seek in a contractor.
His foreman, Eric, is equally fantastic and a real expert
at his craft. We couldn't be happier with the work, its
cost and its timely completion."
To see the
extent of the renovation project we created this YouTube
company took a gross hole in the ground filled with ucky black
water and turned it into a sparkling blue oasis of a pool...
all with minimum time and hassle. I'd definitely recommend
them." CELESTE C. Escondido, CA
re-plastered and re-tiled our swimming pool. It's tough
to hire someone when you know nothing about the process,
so I rely a lot on references. I called a few references
for Oly's and each had different requirements for their
pools - the first was focused on aesthetics and water color;
the second was in the construction business and focused
on construction. The third was most interested in price.
We were interested in all three issues. It's almost a year
later, and we have a small issue with some grout. They responded
by arranging to send someone out right away. All in all,
we are pleased with the outcome and the follow up service.
I didn't give them 5 stars because we did have a couple
of avoidable issues during the process. Having said that,
I would recommend them with advice to the customer to be
sure that you are informed on the process and any specific
issues you are interested in. I think a company should also
be judged on how well they handle problems. A couple of
problems occurred, and Oly's was responsive and handled
each to our satisfaction. Oly's is primarily family owned
and operated and they obviously depend on, and value their
reputation.Their office person is friendly, knowledgeable
and helpful. Calls are always returned promptly. The job
was finished on time. The only delay was a result of a tile
choice change made by us. Oh, and the pricing was highly
competitive. Of the three contractors I quoted, I was also
impressed with Oly's knowledge and advice on the job. The
crew was experienced, hard working, professional and polite.
Don't expect HGTV type design help. Oly's provides example
books, pictures of jobs they've done, and tile samples as
requested, but you will need to determine the design yourself.
They will, however advise you away from anything they think
might be a bad choice, but ultimately leave the design decisions
to the customer, as they should.Last comment. Oly's does
not do post plastering pool start-up, but they will recommend
companies to you. Plan on an additional $300 or so for that
service." CAROL J. Oceanside,
